Good news! Most apps I've tried on Microsoft's Copilot Surface just work
Have you been burned before by Windows on Arm? Are you worried whether the apps you need will actually run on Copilot PCs? But after playing around with one myself, I'm fairly optimistic that those days are over, as Qualcomm executives promised. After receiving a Surface Pro (2024) 11th Edition from Microsoft for review, I spent a good chunk of my first day just downloading various applications and seeing if they'd run--and if they did, how well. First, this is indeed a productivity tablet, and Microsoft and Qualcomm have done a good job making sure most common productivity application work without hassle. Second, Copilot PCs are not gaming PCs, and there's a good chance your favorite games won't even run.
Here are the most useful Apple Vision Pro apps at launch
Although there are some big-name omissions (Netflix, YouTube and Spotify), the headset already supports over a million compatible App Store apps, Apple's first-party offerings and over 600 apps developed specifically for the "spatial computing" device. Here are the notable third-party Vision Pro apps you can install on day one. Microsoft didn't skimp on its entry into the Vision Pro era. Seven of the company's Office apps are available to install on launch day. These include Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and Loop.
No time to tidy? Microsoft Teams can now use AI to clean up your background on video calls
'Make meetings more fun and personal with Decorate your background,' Microsoft said The fancy option adds sparkling fairy lights and glasses of champagne to your background. Meanwhile, the celebration option adds a festive Christmas tree and presents behind you. The feature will launch in early 2024 for Teams Premium users. The news comes shortly after a study revealed how your background on video calls can influence the first impression you make. Researchers from Durham University say that people who sit in front of houseplants or bookcases are deemed the most trustworthy.
The one Windows 11 app I loathe is getting an overhaul
Microsoft has begun formally rolling out the Windows 11 2023 Update (aka Windows 11 23H2) on Halloween with an unexpected treat: a redo of the "Chat" function within Windows 11. Microsoft began rolling out "Moment 4" of Windows 11 this week, aka the Windows 11 2023 Update, with a comprehensive list of features that includes Copilot's AI chatbot. Microsoft formally announced the rollout on Tuesday morning. Microsoft is describing this as a "cumulative" rollup update, so you'll get all of the features Microsoft has announced previously. Now, Windows has revamped the "Chat" function on the Windows desktop with what Microsoft is calling "Microsoft Teams (free)," pulling a bland mask over the top of the same terrible concept as before.

Microsoft Team's newest filter applies your makeup for you
Most people know the feeling of having an off-morning--e.g., sleeping past your alarm or the coffee just not kicking in. Putting on a full face of makeup is one way to shake yourself out of the doldrums before your video meetings, but it takes time. Or at least, it did before Microsoft's newest video filter for Teams, which lets you skip the real-world primping. Called the Maybelline Beauty app, this set of effects lets users apply digital makeup colors and skin blurring to their faces--an amped up version of Zoom's long-available "Touch up my appearance" video setting, which smooths out skin imperfections. Microsoft's filters rely on AI-powered tech called Modiface (owned by Maybelline's parent company L'Oreal), which creates a virtual map of faces to apply the digital makeup.

Microsoft Rolling Out Supply Chain Platform
Microsoft is targeting the supply chain market with its latest software release. The Microsoft Supply Chain Platform is designed to help organizations maximize their supply chain data estate investment via a combination of Microsoft artificial intelligence (AI), collaboration, low code, security, and SaaS applications within one overarching platform, according to the company last month. This supply chain software rollout by Microsoft comes at a time of supply chain disruption worldwide. Whether due to COVID-19 lockdowns, the Great Recession, the "Great Resignation," quiet quitting, layoffs, legislation that impacted trucking and shipping, the war in Ukraine, or other factors, the global supply chain has stuttered of late. Chip shortages, cabling shortages, and much longer lead times for equipment have become the norm. Supply chain dovetails nicely into existing Microsoft strengths in enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), collaboration, project management, and the cloud.
